The author and the UNIQ Managing Director and Co-Founder Andy Wong.

It’s only in the very recent past that I finally gave in bought an Apple authorized charging cable, the sort that costs a thousand and up because after buying so many cheap imitations that work for like a heartbeat, you just got tired of replacing them. In the end, it may cost five times as much as an original, but they are always reliable.

It’s generally an Apple product because while there are many more Android users overall, market research always shows that it’s overwhelmingly i-phone/Apple users that pay for premium apps and accessories.

It has also been a feature of daily life that as phones become lighter, you still have to lug a heavy power bank to make sure you are able to use your phone and its power sapping apps throughout the day. Increasingly, as phone and gadget accessories have become more vital, people have been more willing to pay for more premium products.

It is in this environment that UNIQ, a brand from Singapore, has entered the fray.  As they recently launched their products in the Philippines, their brand ethos is combining reliability with a certain ln flair in design. One of the reasons the brand chose the Philippines for expansion according to Andy Wong, Managing Director and Co-founder of UNIQ, is that a lot of the feedback, such as likes and interaction the brand has on social media comes from the Philippines.

Michelle Cea of MACPOWER, the exclusive distributor of UNIQ in the Philippines, swears by the products herself. She said her phone is proof of how well the brand’s phone case works because she tends to bump them everywhere. The Elements series, as the name, implies, gets its inspiration from nature with the colors that are naturally occurring such as slates and earth hues, and, still playing with the theme, no two cases are alike. They are as the release states, “engineered with edge-to-edge Co-Mould Technology with PC (polycarbonate) coverage on the sides for maximum shock-and-drop protection”.

It used to be that you sacrificed form for function and needed to either choose a sleek elegant cover that offered minimal protection or make your phone look like a battle tank. These days, you can have your glitter (or your hipster, elegantly colored cases that wouldn’t stand out from tasteful furniture), and still offer your phone excellent protection. The UNIQ power packs are the same, they are not only stylish, in tones of muted turquoise, olive and slate,  they are also lightweight.

What I like about the UNIQ range of phone and gadget accessories were the simple tweaks to conventional designs to make it more convenient and user-friendly. They have chargers that come with holders so you can prop your phone while it charges or the way the integrated stand is designed n a case. The Vertex, a wireless charger, has a folding mechanism and a 3-coil design allowing for easy flat-lay and upright charging at any angle.

The Halo is a Lightning to USB-C cable that coils the wires in a cute flexible pod. The airpod cases are made of leather and come in a bright red, presumably so you can find them easily, the bottom is cut to allow charging even while it’s inside the case. One of their power products is the Aereo is a 3-in-1 Fast Wireless Charging Pad bundled with QC 3.0 fast charger, where you can charge 3 gadgets on a single platform.

You get the feeling that UNIQ takes the fashion aspect of their designs very seriously, and as i-watches have become more ubiquitous, UNIQ also has a line of i-watch straps that come in both leather and steel bands easily transforming them to fashion pieces with just a flick of the wrist.

The UNIQ kiosk is located at 4F Cyberzone, The Annex Building, SM City North EDSA.
