In time for the 60th anniversary since the launch of the first iconic Grand Seiko timepiece, the brand held its first-ever craftsman event in Manila with no less than its current Craftsman Takuya Nishinaka as a special guest.
The Nature of Time: The Grand Seiko Master Craftsman Event was an immersive celebration of Grand Seiko’s legacy and world-class quality. Held at the Lexus Manila Showroom, guests stepped into a space lit by the rich shade of Grand Seiko blue, imbibing the brand’s iconic identity and complemented with the swooning melody of the Koto. Within its walls was an LED tunnel that elaborately introduced Grand Seiko’s product timeline, an elegant display of the Lexus RX 350, and Japanese calligraphist Oj Hofer who personalized guests’ names and performed Ensō calligraphy, a traditional form of Japanese art. Among these, the spotlight shone especially on the four Grand Seiko anniversary pieces that were showcased for guests to try. Other watch pieces were also displayed, which allured many to marvel over the undeniable craftsmanship of Grand Seiko.
To start off the main program, host Issa Litton greeted the attendees and acknowledged the presence of beloved guests. Sharing the story of The Nature of Time was Mr. Yoshikatsu Kawada, Director and Senior Vice President of Seiko Watch Corporation who welcomed everyone to the 60th anniversary and launch of Grand Seiko. He was followed by Mr. Karl Emmanuel Dy, President of Timeplus Corporation, who gave an elaborate introduction to Grand Seiko by emphasizing the fundamentals and craftsmanship that goes through each piece. His introduction was complemented by the arrival of Craftsman Takuya Nishinaka, who stylishly entered the showroom in a blue 2020 Lexus LC 500, who then gave a full demonstration on how to assemble the iconic Grand Seiko Snowflake which not only beguiled guests, but also drew them into a deeper appreciation of Grand Seiko’s unparalleled precision, durability, and beauty—all of which stand as pillars of the brand’s world-class craftsmanship.
Two lucky guests, Sam Valenciano and Aya Cojuangco, were given the chance to assemble the Grand Seiko Snowflake on stage with the assistance of Craftsman Takuya Nishinaka. The audience watched as both ladies each took their turn in following a meticulous step-by-step guide to build the mechanical watch in five minutes. The night capped off with the awarding of four lucky winners who each received a round trip business class ticket to Japan.
Among those who took part of the celebration were socialites, watch aficionados, collectors, hobbyists, and friends from the media.
Authentic Japanese, Iconic Timepieces
Grand Seiko is a luxury brand that offers timepieces made by skilled craftsmen by hand in two exclusive watchmaking studios, using parts produced in-house. It has long been the grail watch for many horologists, because of its combination of understated elegance and the functionality that espouses the uniquely Japanese aesthetics in details.
Each Grand Seiko watch is instantly recognizable because of its simplicity of form and its understated elegance that transcends time. From the very first Grand Seiko watch in 1960 to the latest collection of today, every Grand Seiko has shared the functional beauty and design purity that has always been its hallmark.
The brand has three collections, each designed with the premium craftsmanship combined with timekeeping technology: The Heritage Collection offers a selection of classic watches that once again brings to life the designs and style of the earliest Grand Seiko timepieces, re-interpreted with the very latest movements, manufacturing techniques and craftsmanship. The Elegance Collection has the strength and resilience to be worn every day while offering a special level of refinement that makes them the perfect choice for those landmark occasions in life where everything has to be just right. The Sports Collection diversifies the Grand Seiko brand to reach those who want to reflect a more active lifestyle, offering from divers to chronographs.
Beauty and Design Inspired by Nature
With a global theme that brings thoughtfulness to The Nature of Time, the launch also highlights the latest sought- after timepiece by global enthusiasts, the GS Snowflake. The luxury watch, familiar to collectors as the SBGA211, has a distinct dial that is inspired by the beauty that surrounds the dial workshop of the Grand Seiko Shinshu Watch Studio in Japan. This unique pattern resembles the snow surface blown by the rough wind in the severe winter of the Shinshu area, where the watch is made—we call it the ‘’snow flake’’. This aesthetic, in addition to the Japanese precision movement that Grand Seiko is known for, offers a gorgeous timepiece that has a glide motion which mimics graceful movement.
Craftsman Takuya Nishinaka, who is currently in charge of training for the younger generation, will hold a demonstration on assembling a Grand Seiko watch. He gives his thoughts on creating timepieces that can be worn on the wrist, alluding to each Grand Seiko piece as a reflection of nature moving in harmony with the passage of time.
Grand Seiko and The Growing Collector Community in the Philippines
Seiko’s long time business partner, President Karl Dy is happy to make the brand more accessible to Filipino horologists who have previously had to search for their grail watches overseas. “We know how big the watch collector community has grown in the Philippines, with many enthusiasts going for luxury brands that have a long, proud heritage such as that of the Grand Seiko. We are proud to bring in the Grand Seiko concept store to the country, especially with the expertise that has been shared with us by Craftsman Nishinaka, to demonstrate the technology that goes inside each timepiece. Aside from the Snowflake, we are planning to bring in more styles in the future for our collections from the proud 60-year history of the brand.”
